20대에 롹밴드로 음악을 시작했으며, 이후에 작곡가와 베이스 연주활동을 병행하게 된다. 대중음악작곡가로서 퓨로듀서 활동을 하던 중, BMG Publishing Korea, Universal Music Publishing Korea의 전속작가로 계약을 한다. 또한 Rock/Fusion Jazz Band인 Lazy Monday를 통하여 Improvisation의 자유로움을 추구하는 음악을 만든다. 이 밴드로 홍콩, 샹하이, 베이징, 페낭 등의 아시안 투어 활동을 했으며, 2장의 음반을 발매한다.
30대 후반부터는 정통재즈에 더욱 관심을 갖게 되어, 콘트라베이스 연주의 범위를 넓혀갔다. 하지만, 작곡가/프로듀서로서의 색깔을 버리지 않았기에, 올드 재즈를 공부하면서 동시에 신디사이저 사운드디자인에 심취하는 극단적인 도전을 한다. 각종 디제잉 장비, 컨트롤러 등을 이용한 라이브 공연용 셋을 연구해왔고, 신디사이징을 이용해 몽환적이고 앰비언트한 분위기를 추구하는’ Night of SeoKyo’라는 프로젝트 팀에서 활동을 한다.
20년 가까이 음악대학교에서 교육자, 연구자의 위치를 지키고 있고, Private Institute를 설립해 어린 학생들을 지도하기도 하였다. 프로듀서, 작곡가, 작가사, 연주자, 사운드디자이너, 교육자의 다채로운 면으로 뮤지션의 삶을 이어오던 중, Bitwig Studio를 접하면서 새로운 사운드디자인, 모듈러, Analog Synth와 DAW의 연결 등에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 2025년 현재 한국의 대학중에서 유일하게 Bitwig Studio의 강의하는 수업을 진행하고 있다.
Kim Jae-hwan, also known as Jay Kim, is a versatile musician based in Seoul, South Korea, whose work spans genres from jazz to electronic music. Beginning his career in his 20s as a rock band member, he transitioned into composing and playing bass, later signing as an exclusive songwriter with BMG Publishing Korea and Universal Music Publishing Korea. His creative journey led him to form the rock/fusion jazz band Lazy Monday, through which he released two albums and toured across Asia, including cities like Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, and Penang.
In his late 30s, he delved into traditional jazz, further developing his skills on the upright bass while maintaining his identity as a composer and producer. Simultaneously, he explored the world of electronic sound design, particularly focusing on synthesizers. This duality of jazz roots and modern production techniques led to the formation of Night of SeoKyo, a project emphasizing dreamy, ambient electronic music through synthesizers and live DJ setups.
He has been a dedicated educator and researcher at the university level for nearly two decades and also runs a private music institute mentoring young talent. His deep curiosity in sound design found new expression through Bitwig Studio. Fascinated by modulation and the integration of analog synthesizers with DAWs, he became South Korea's only university instructor teaching Bitwig Studio as of 2025. His multifaceted career blends performance, composition, sound innovation, and education, continuously pushing boundaries in both traditional and contemporary music.
