Designed to Keep You Creating
Modern music-making gives us many powerful tools, but they don’t always work in harmony. An effective DAW needs to bring it all together as seamlessly as possible.
This philosophy guides Bitwig in many ways. Bitwig Studio is truly cross-platform, being one of the few DAWs with native Linux support. It’s plug-and-play with a ton of hardware thanks to our in-house controller integrations and open Controller API. It offers deeply thought-out Touch Integration for tablets and more. And it natively speaks many different signal languages, including MPE and CV – meaning Bitwig can converse fluently with your hardware.
Unmatched Stability
Bitwig’s architecture is unusual among DAWs, keeping its application, audio engine, and plug-ins in separate threads. This sandboxing improves the smoothness of your experience in important ways. If your audio engine crashes, it doesn’t bring down the program – simply reload the engine and keep working. And the same goes for plug-ins, meaning one VST might crash but your live performance keeps going.
In fact, Bitwig Studio lets you choose exactly how plug-ins are sandboxed. So you can save memory and take a few risks, or use more memory for maximum safety.
The separation of audio engine and plug-ins is also noticeable during startup. Projects will load immediately, with plug-ins following after. So when opening large projects, you’re not left staring at a frozen program. Instead, you’re free to start exploring and editing tracks, clips, and devices – and creating new ones. Your plug-ins will become accessible as they load.
Bitwig also makes it possible to open multiple projects at once. Opened projects co-exist in tabs. It’s easy to switch from one to the next, and drag tracks, clips, and devices between them. Just manually load the audio engine for whichever project you are working on.
Additional projects are accessible even while audio is running in your main project. Let’s say you’re listening through a track and remember you wanted to add a clip from another project. During playback, you can load the other project, drag across a clip, and drop it into the timeline. The clip will play when the playhead reaches it – no interruptions.
Fast Performance, Scalable Design
Bitwig is designed to thrive even with heavily-loaded projects. Basic program functions – such as loading new tracks, devices, and plug-ins – do not slow down as a project is filled with material.
Bitwig looks at what processor your machine is running, and loads tracks, devices, and presets in a way that suits it. That means it works with your hardware to get the best performance, whether it’s a cutting-edge machine or a homey old laptop.
Additionally, since Bitwig Studio 5.3, Bitwig's device/DSP code compiles in parallel. When first loading a project, Bitwig caches the results efficiently, meaning presets will load even faster next time.
This enables the audition-in-place feature: while browsing for devices, plug-ins, or presets in the pop-up browser, your current choice is immediately previewed in the device chain and affects whatever audio is passing through. That’s before you’ve actually chosen to load the device.
Do More With Your Plug-Ins
Working with plug-ins in Bitwig Studio is seamless. VST2.4, VST3, and CLAP formats are supported on all platforms, including native bit-bridging for 32-bit and 64-bit plug-ins on Windows and Linux – no third-party bridging necessary. Bitwig’s plug-in delay compensation simply works, so you can stop tweaking settings and start creating.
As part of the VST3 standard, we proudly support per-note expressions and sample-accurate automation. And CLAP, the open plug-in format we developed with u-he, offers further capabilities such as per-note automation and modulation, and better performance from modern CPUs.
Bitwig Studio’s modular structure gives your plug-ins superpowers. Use container devices to give any plug-in a dry/wet knob, mid-side control, or sophisticated spectral processing (with our Spectral devices). Or use Bitwig’s unified modulation system to control your plug-in with LFOs, envelopes, step sequencers, and more.
It’s easy to transfer projects from other software into Bitwig Studio with your plug-in settings intact – so you can keep working with Bitwig’s expanded possibilities. The DAWproject format, from us and Presonus, can be used to transfer projects between Bitwig Studio, Fender Studio, and Cubase 14. Or simply open Ableton Live and FL Studio project files directly in Bitwig.
